The Government of Ghana has announced plans to begin the next phase of evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic attacks against migrants.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, July 25, 2026, about 1,000 Ghanaians are expected to be brought home in groups.
The first evacuation flights are scheduled to arrive in Accra on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27, 2026.
The exercise will begin with Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria and have chosen to return home with the government’s support.
Priority will be given to women, children, elderly people, students, people with medical conditions and other vulnerable individuals.
Ghanaians in South Africa who need assistance have been advised to contact the Ghana High Commission on 0723681010 for information about registration and travel arrangements.
The government expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for providing temporary shelter to affected Ghanaians free of charge.
The facilities have reportedly accommodated several people who fled their homes and were waiting for the Ghana High Commission to process their return.
High Commission Reactivates Emergency Response
The Ministry said the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria had reactivated its emergency consular response and was prepared to assist Ghanaians who wished to return home safely.
Ghanaians living in South Africa have been urged to remain calm, stay away from areas affected by violence, avoid responding to provocations and cooperate with officials of the High Commission.
The government said it was committed to ensuring that the evacuation exercise was carried out successfully and safely.
“Government assures that we shall leave no Ghanaian behind in harm’s way,” the statement said.
