Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as Aston Villa secured a dramatic 3–2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving the London club without a league win after five matches.
Despite scoring twice in the closing stages, Tottenham could not complete a remarkable comeback after Aston Villa had established a commanding three-goal lead.
The visitors opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time through Johan Manzambi, who converted from close range to give Unai Emery’s side the advantage heading into the break.
Tottenham had enjoyed a promising start to the match, creating several opportunities and forcing Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into important saves. However, their failure to capitalise on those chances proved costly as Villa gradually gained control of the encounter.
The situation worsened for Tottenham in the 67th minute when Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s lead after combining with Manzambi. Emiliano Buendía then added a spectacular third goal in the 79th minute, seemingly putting the match beyond the home side.
However, Tottenham refused to surrender.
Conor Gallagher finally broke the club’s league scoring drought in the 86th minute, reducing the deficit and giving the home supporters renewed hope.
Deep into stoppage time, defender Jan Paul van Hecke headed home Tottenham’s second goal to set up a tense finish. Unfortunately for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, the comeback came too late, with Aston Villa holding on to secure all three points.
The defeat leaves Tottenham with just two points from their opening five Premier League matches and places them in the relegation zone heading into the international break.
For Aston Villa, the victory represents a significant boost after a difficult start to the campaign. Emery’s side demonstrated attacking quality and took advantage of Tottenham’s defensive vulnerabilities to claim their first league win of the season.
Tottenham, meanwhile, face mounting pressure to improve their performances and results. Although the late comeback showed determination, the team must address its defensive problems and become more clinical in front of goal.
De Zerbi will now have the international break to assess his squad and prepare for the challenges ahead as Tottenham search for their first Premier League victory of the campaign.
