Bruno Fernandes produced a captain’s performance as Manchester United came from behind to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, securing their first Premier League victory of the new season.
United entered the match under pressure after losing their opening league game, and things initially went from bad to worse when Leif Davis gave Ipswich the lead in the 29th minute.
However, Fernandes quickly dragged his side back into the contest.
The Manchester United captain equalised in the 40th minute, ensuring the teams went into halftime level before the hosts took complete control after the break.
United moved ahead in the 56th minute when Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net.
Fernandes then made it 3-1 from the penalty spot in the 61st minute before completing his hat-trick just seven minutes later.
It was only the second Premier League hat-trick of Fernandes’ career, and the performance showed why the Portuguese midfielder remains one of United’s most important players.
Bryan Mbeumo added United’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute, with Fernandes also contributing the assist.
Ipswich managed a late consolation through Chuba Akpom in stoppage time, but by then the result was already beyond doubt.
The victory was also notable for Marcus Rashford, who returned to Manchester United’s starting lineup for the first time since December 2024 following loan spells away from Old Trafford.
For manager Michael Carrick, the result provided the perfect response after United’s disappointing start to the campaign.
Fernandes, meanwhile, continues to underline his importance to the club. After being named PFA Player of the Year for his performances last season, the United captain has started the new campaign by showing that he can be both creator and goalscorer.
Manchester United still have plenty to prove this season, but a five-goal performance at Old Trafford should provide some much-needed confidence.
