American rapper YNW Melly remains behind bars as his long-running double murder case moves closer to a highly anticipated retrial scheduled for January 2027.
The Florida-born artist, whose real name is Jamell Maurice Demons, has been in custody since February 2019 following his arrest in connection with the 2018 deaths of two fellow musicians.
Despite spending more than seven years behind bars, the rapper has not been convicted of the murder charges against him.
YNW Melly Denied Bond Ahead of Retrial
Earlier this year, Melly’s legal team made another attempt to secure his release while awaiting trial.
During an April 30, 2026, court hearing in Broward County, Florida, his attorneys presented a proposed release arrangement involving around-the-clock supervision, family support and strict restrictions on his movements.
However, a judge denied the renewed bond request in May, meaning the rapper must remain in custody as his criminal proceedings continue.
The decision disappointed supporters who have closely followed the case since his initial arrest.
What Happened in YNW Melly’s Murder Case?
Melly faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the October 2018 shooting deaths of Christopher Thomas Jr., known as YNW Juvy, and Anthony Williams, known as YNW Sakchaser.
Prosecutors allege that the rapper killed the two men following a recording session and attempted to make the incident appear to be a drive-by shooting.
His defense has disputed the allegations.
The case initially went to trial in 2023, but jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in a mistrial.
In January 2026, prosecutors also dropped separate witness tampering and related charges, although the double murder prosecution remains active.
When Is YNW Melly’s Next Court Date?
According to court developments reported by NBC 6 South Florida, Melly’s murder retrial is scheduled for January 2027.
The rapper could face severe punishment, including the death penalty, if convicted.
For now, Melly remains a pretrial detainee rather than a convicted prisoner in the murder case.
With the retrial approaching, his legal situation continues to attract attention from hip-hop fans worldwide.
