Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning performance to defeat defending Premier League champions Arsenal 3–0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, bringing the Gunners’ perfect start to the season to a dramatic end.
Goals from Pascal Groß, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andrés secured a memorable victory for Brighton, who were celebrating their 125th anniversary. The result also marked Arsenal’s first league defeat of the campaign after winning their opening four matches.
Brighton started the encounter with confidence, pressing Arsenal aggressively and creating several opportunities in the opening stages. Their attacking approach eventually paid off in the 31st minute when Groß found the back of the net with a right-footed effort from outside the penalty area.
Arsenal attempted to respond, but Brighton remained dangerous whenever they moved forward. Just before halftime, Kostoulas doubled the home side’s advantage with a well-taken finish following a swift counterattack, leaving Mikel Arteta’s men facing a difficult task after the break.
The second half brought further disappointment for Arsenal as Brighton continued to dominate proceedings. In the 57th minute, Andrés rose to head home a corner delivered by Groß, extending the hosts’ lead to three goals and effectively putting the contest beyond Arsenal’s reach.
Despite introducing fresh players and attempting to regain control, Arsenal struggled to break down Brighton’s organised defence. Kai Havertz had an opportunity to reduce the deficit, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made an important save to preserve his side’s clean sheet.
Brighton continued to threaten in the closing stages, with Malick Yalcouyé striking the post as the hosts pushed for another goal.
The victory moved Brighton to 10 points after five Premier League matches, just two points behind Arsenal, who remained on 12.
For Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler, the result represents an impressive achievement against the reigning champions and provides further encouragement following his team’s strong start to the season.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will need to regroup after a disappointing afternoon exposed weaknesses in their defensive organisation and attacking effectiveness. Arteta will be hoping his players respond positively when Premier League action resumes after the international break.
