The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is officially heating up after the 30-man shortlist was revealed, featuring some of the biggest names in world football.
Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are among the headline nominees hoping to succeed Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembélé, who won the men’s award in 2025. Dembélé himself is also nominated again this year.
Kane enters the conversation as one of the strongest contenders following an outstanding campaign with Bayern Munich and England. The striker enjoyed a remarkable goalscoring season while helping Bayern achieve major success and playing an important role in England’s run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal is another serious challenger. Still one of football’s brightest young stars, Yamal continued to impress for both club and country and has strengthened his case to become one of the youngest Ballon d’Or winners in history.
Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé also makes the shortlist after another prolific season, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland remains firmly in contention after another huge goalscoring campaign.
One of the biggest talking points is the return of Lionel Messi. The Argentine legend, already a record eight-time winner, has earned another nomination after impressive performances for Inter Miami and Argentina. It marks his 17th appearance on a Ballon d’Or shortlist.
Other notable nominees include Jude Bellingham, Rodri, Vinícius Júnior, Declan Rice, Michael Olise, Vitinha and Achraf Hakimi.
This year’s ceremony will be especially historic. The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on October 26, 2026, at the London Palladium, marking the first time the event has been held in London. The location also pays tribute to England’s Stanley Matthews, who became the first Ballon d’Or winner in 1956.
With Kane, Yamal, Mbappé, Messi and several other stars in contention, the battle for football’s most prestigious individual prize promises to be one of the biggest storylines of the year.
