Lil Durk’s closely watched federal murder-for-hire trial has entered a critical stage, with jurors beginning deliberations in Los Angeles on Wednesday, September 9, following closing arguments from prosecutors and the rapper’s defense team.
Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, has pleaded not guilty to charges connected to an August 2022 shooting in Los Angeles that killed Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, the cousin of rapper Quando Rondo. Prosecutors allege that Rondo was the intended target and claim the shooting was carried out as retaliation for the 2020 death of Durk’s close friend and OTF artist King Von.
During closing arguments, federal prosecutors portrayed Durk as the person behind the alleged revenge plot. They argued that members of his Only The Family (OTF) circle traveled to California and carried out the attack with his support.
Durk’s lawyers strongly challenged that version of events. Attorneys Brian Steel and Drew Findling attacked the credibility of cooperating witnesses Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester and Kavon “OTF Vonnie” Grant, both of whom admitted involvement in the plot. The defense argued that witnesses had incentives to implicate Durk in hopes of receiving more favorable treatment from prosecutors.
The trial has also drawn attention because prosecutors introduced messages, music-related material and testimony they said helped establish motive and intent. Durk’s defense pushed back, arguing that lyrics and artistic expression should not be treated as proof that he ordered a killing.
The case stems from the August 19, 2022 attack near the Beverly Center. Quando Rondo survived, while Robinson was fatally shot.
Durk, a Grammy-winning Chicago rapper and one of the biggest names associated with the modern drill scene, faces severe consequences if convicted. Reports from the courtroom indicate he could face a potential life sentence if found guilty on all counts.
For now, the outcome rests with the jury. As of September 9, no verdict has been announced, making the next development one of the most closely watched moments in hip-hop this week.
