Cape Verde continued their impressive debut World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Uruguay in Miami, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
After earning a surprise draw against Spain in their opening match, Cape Verde once again showed their quality by taking the lead through Kevin Pina, whose long-range free-kick found its way through Uruguay’s wall and into the net in the 21st minute.
Uruguay responded strongly and leveled the score when Maxi Araujo headed home after a defensive mistake from Cape Verde. The South Americans then took the lead just before halftime through Agustin Canobbio, who finished from close range after a well-worked attack.
Despite falling behind, Cape Verde refused to give up. Their persistence paid off in the second half when Helio Varela capitalized on a costly defensive error from Uruguay. The forward intercepted a misplaced pass, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to make it 2-2.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Uruguay thought they had found one through Federico Valverde, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Late chances came at both ends, but neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.
The result leaves Uruguay and Cape Verde on two points each after two matches in Group H, with qualification for the knockout stage still within reach.
Cape Verde Continue to Impress
One of the biggest positives for Cape Verde was their confidence and attacking intent. Unlike their defensive performance against Spain, the Blue Sharks played with greater freedom and regularly threatened Uruguay on the counter-attack.
Their willingness to keep attacking, even late in the game, highlighted the belief growing within the squad. With a crucial final group match against Saudi Arabia approaching, Cape Verde have a genuine opportunity to make history by reaching the knockout rounds.
For Uruguay, concerns remain over their finishing after another match in which they failed to turn dominance into victory. They now face a difficult clash against Spain knowing they likely need a positive result to stay in the tournament.
