Katy Perry has strongly criticised the White House for using her hit song “Firework” in a military video.
The video reportedly showed footage of United States strikes against targets in Iran. It was shared on the White House’s TikTok account without Perry’s approval.
The singer said she was deeply upset by the use of the song.
“Firework” was released in 2010 and is widely known as a song about confidence, hope and personal strength. Perry said its message should not be connected to violence or military action.
The video reportedly received millions of views before Perry publicly objected.
She joins several musicians who have complained about their songs being used in political or government-related videos without permission.
The disagreement has again raised questions about whether political organisations should use popular music without first receiving approval from the artists or copyright holders.
