Japan boosted their chances of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tunisia, ending the North Africans’ hopes of progressing in the tournament.
Tunisia came into the match hoping for a fresh start after appointing Hervé Renard as head coach following their heavy defeat to Sweden. However, the change in leadership failed to produce an immediate turnaround as Japan dominated from start to finish.
The Asian side got off to a dream start, taking the lead within the opening four minutes through Daichi Kamada, who finished off a well-executed counter-attack. Ayase Ueda doubled Japan’s advantage shortly afterward with a clinical strike from outside the box.
Tunisia struggled to gain control of the game and found it difficult to create meaningful chances against a disciplined Japanese side.
Japan added a third goal when Junya Ito calmly finished after breaking through the Tunisian defense. Ueda then grabbed his second goal of the match with a well-placed header to complete the rout.
The victory moves Japan onto four points in Group F and puts them in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32. They will now turn their attention to a crucial final group-stage clash against Sweden.
Speaking after the match, Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu praised his players’ preparation and execution.
“We prepared well and played aggressively. The players understood exactly what was required and delivered an excellent performance. The support from our fans also gave us extra motivation,” he said.
For Tunisia, the defeat confirms their elimination from the competition. They will now look to end their World Cup campaign on a positive note when they face group leaders Netherlands in their final group match.
