Spain are world champions once again after beating Argentina 1-0 in a thrilling 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute, ending Argentina’s strong resistance and sending Spanish supporters into wild celebrations.
Spain controlled most of the match, enjoyed more possession and created the better chances. Argentina, meanwhile, failed to record a single shot on target during the entire 120 minutes.
The final was likely Lionel Messi’s last appearance at a World Cup. However, the 39-year-old could not inspire Argentina to another historic victory.
Spain’s young stars, including Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Mikel Oyarzabal, caused problems for the Argentine defence from the opening whistle.
As the pressure increased, Argentina became more physical. Alexis Mac Allister, Nicolás Tagliafico and Lisandro Martínez were involved in several heavy challenges.
Enzo Fernández was eventually sent off late in extra time following a reckless tackle on Pau Cubarsí.
Despite Spain’s dominance, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced several excellent saves to keep Argentina in the game. He denied Torres, Pedri, Cubarsí and Nico Williams with important stops.
Williams thought he had opened the scoring early in extra time after sliding the ball into the net. However, referee Slavko Vinčić ruled out the goal for a foul on Nicolás Otamendi.
Spain continued to attack and finally found the breakthrough four minutes later.
Pedro Porro sent a dangerous cross towards the far post, where Williams headed the ball back across goal. Torres reacted quickly and fired an unstoppable shot past Martínez.
Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Spain’s organised defence remained strong until the final whistle.
The victory gave Spain their second World Cup title, following their first triumph in South Africa in 2010.
It was a fitting end to an outstanding tournament for Luis de la Fuente’s team. Spain’s combination of young talent, energy and tactical discipline made them one of the competition’s strongest sides.
After conquering the world, Spain will now turn their attention to the UEFA European Championship as they look to continue their success and build a new era of international dominance.
